I have found that most people are looking for a golden goose solution, which I do not have. I work hard, writing for eight hours a day, seven days a week. Working hard is the only way I know to escape from the classroom.

The difference between writing and teaching is enormous:

  • I write where, when and how I choose
  • I am in control of my own working day
  • I am at nobody’s back and call
  • I have no pointless meetings
  • I have no stress

The differences between writing and other jobs are equally great:

  • I am on my own, not sharing an office or van with obnoxious people
  • I have no commute to work
  • I am responsible only to myself for the work I do each day
  • The only targets I have are those I set for myself

I have set up a new website that guides you through the process of starting your own writing business online called OnlineWritingBusiness.com.

The site is in its infancy yet and will change in appearance over the next few days, but if you are looking for where to start you could start there and read the new posts that are added every day at this stage. The site is totally free. There is no email list to sign up for and no membership is required. The idea of the site came to me yesterday morning. 20 minutes later the site was live with WordPress installed. It took me 30 minutes to put the first post together and I spend 20 minutes a day adding one post daily. Websites are that easy to build.

Online Writing Business will allow me to help more people than I can by one to one email, and some people will prefer the anonymous format. I welcome your input into this site concept, especially at this early stage in its development.

Learn to Build Websites-2 Day Course

I propose to run a course in August where I will show people how to build websites using WordPress.

You MUST have your own websites in order to make a reliable income online and many people are reluctant to make a start because of the perceived difficulty of this process.

I can build a new website for myself in four hours. The first time I did it the site took me two days to build, so I propose to make the course a two day one. Location will depend on where people are coming from.

This course will cost £600 including two nights Bed and Breakfast accommodation at a good hotel. A buffet lunch will be included on both days.

This will be a hands-on course where I will help you to build your first website. I guarantee that at the end of the course you will have a four page website set up and know where you are going with it. I will build your website myself if you have not finished it by the end of the two days.

All you need is your own laptop computer.

Places are limited to ten, so I can give everyone the attention they need.

2 Ways to Get Free Website Content

If I could show you a way to have other writers give you fresh and unique high quality content every day for your website, would you be interested?

This is surely the way to go.

There are actually two ways to do this. One is free and slow, the other costs money, but is fast.

The Slow Free Way to get Free Content

This is the Maxi-Site concept I have written about in the past. My Women’s Interests site started off this way. You need a large number of writers and you need to install a WordPress plug in that gives them a good share of any advertising revenue.

This method is slow because your site is young and will not have many visitors, so any income your writers receive will be correspondingly slow to grow. Writers will only contribute to sites that pay them to do so.

The Fast Subscription Way to get Free Content

I pay $33 a month to The Keyword Academy. That gives me access to a superb keyword research tool, advice, a proven money-making method and to PostRunner.

Postrunner has two benefits:

  1. You can use it to post links back to your content. Links are what you need in order to rank higher in search engines. You just write 300 word posts that are related to your content and put two links in each post.
  2. You can allow other TKA members to make 300-500 word posts to your own WordPress sites. No payment is required; you just need to leave the links in place.

I have four sites in the PostRunner system now. Two receive new posts every day, the other two are in smaller niches but I receive new posts to those every week. Check out my Women’s Interests site. Most of the posts on there are from PostRunner. I put the pictures in and format them, but the site has new material every day, which has always been my target.

The more sites you accept PostRunner posts for the better value for money you get from your $33 a month subscription because you earn all the advertising revenue from your guest posts yourself.

What Else Can a Teacher Do?

What transferable skills do teachers have?

Teachers are communication experts. They can read people and transfer knowledge. These skills are highly valued in the commercial training market yet they are skills that we take for granted. These were not skills that we were ever taught; we just learned them through hard lessons in the classroom.

Unfortunately we have no paper qualifications in communication expertise, so three options are open to us:

  • Find someone who does understand what teachers really do in the classroom and who can grasp how transferable those skills are
  • We can study and earn paper qualifications in communication skills. This option means being taught by people who know less than we do, and is an unpalatable one for most people
  • We can set up our own businesses. We know what we can do and if you are the boss you do not have to impress a 30 year old HR interviewer who is frightened because she knows you could do her job tomorrow

Could You Teach Study Skills?

So you’re thinking about escaping from the ‘chalk-face’?  You’ve committed the majorityof your working life to education, but now you’re tired and looking for a way out?  If so, then it pays to regularly scan the educational press for opportunities.

For example, this week in the press there is an article titled “Schools blamed for lack of study skills”.  Apparently undergraduates feel they “lack vital skills needed for university study”. Over 90% of participants in a survey felt that their school could have done more to prepare them better for the academic rigour of university.

A particular highlight was the lack of necessary independent study and research skills when they arrived.

A New Online Writing Opportunity

I have written about writing collaboration sites before. These sites have content written by many authors and are aimed at people, rather than search engines. New content is added daily or even more often and people come back frequently to see the latest site content.

Repeat visitors are good news and the site ranks well in searches for related terms.

I have set up a women’s interests website using this model called 21Cwoman.com.

21Cwoman.com is a web magazine that women log onto on a daily basis during their coffee break, over breakfast or in the evening. It is very broad in nature, as broad as women’s interests are broad, and you can write about almost anything.

Freelance Writing

I have a day job. YES!

One of the writers I did some work for earlier in the year has asked me to do some editing for him. It should be a long-term job, with one task following the next. The rate of pay is about 10 euro an hour, working from home when I want to. That’s a lot higher than a minimum wage job, which is all I would ever get in the offline world. I should net 300 euro a week, which, with my pension, gives me a good income.

Freelance writing is not generally very lucrative. There is too much competition from India, China and the Philippines. The only way you can find highly-paid freelance jobs is through contacts.

How Do Internet Marketers Work?

Internet Marketers are generally the scum of the Earth. They sell dreams to dreamers who cannot wait to part with their money. I know, I was a dreamer once.

I have spent thousands of pounds chasing the dream of Internet Riches. I realise now that there is no magic button way to get rich. The only way to make a living online is through hard work and by applying common sense.

Newbie Internet marketers often fail to realise that when they pay their money all they are buying is a way to extract money from other newbies. There is very rarely a real-life, tangible product. I have never been able to tell most Internet marketing schemes from illegal offline pyramid schemes.

Leave Teaching and Find Another Job

If you are over 40 years old you are going to find it extremely difficult to find a position as an employee outside teaching. Your only chance is to start your own business.

In today’s high unemployment situation there are hundreds of potential employees in the 20-35 age range who will be ahead of you in the employment queue.

HR managers are generally in their 30s and not one of them is going to appoint a 50+ year old who is less malleable than a 25 year old. We older people know how things work and are usually more cynical than younger people. We present a threat to most managers in that we could do their jobs better than they can, even without any specific training or qualifications.

Social Monkee – 25 Free Links a Day

I was recommended to join SocialMonkee.com. It is a free service that lets you post your links to 25 social bookmarking sites every day.

I have never been big on social bookmarking sites. I think they are a lot of hassle for the potential gain, but I have had some amazing results when people have bookmarked my sites at StumbleUpon or Digg.

The sites Social Monkee uses are mostly much smaller sites than Digg or Facebook, but every link counts, and it is so easy to do. I have tried IMAutomator.com but found the results to be disappointing.

Other people I talk to have had positive results from Social Monkee, so I gave it a whirl. I liked it so much I upgraded to the paid service ($47 one off fee). The paid service lets me post three links to 100 social sites a day and to dripfeed the links over a 14 day period. If I post links to all my articles, I will need that many, and $47 seems a very small price to pay.

Even with the recent changes in Google links into your articles and blogs are essential if you want them to appear in search results.
